Reading eJournals

An eJournal is a journal in electronic format. The Foundation Years Journal is a monthly peer-reviewed publication which seeks to be the pre-eminent journal in the field of patient safety and clinical practice for Foundation Years' doctors and educators.

Reading 123Library eJournals does not require a plug-in so firewalls are simply not a problem. Instead we use our own 123Fastreader which means pages upload quickly on your screen and can be scrolled through with ease.

To read an eJournal issue simply click on the 'Read now' link on the 'more details' page of an eJournal issue:

A link to 'Read the file with 123FastReader' will appear. Click on this to open the eJournal issue. (Alternatively, for assistance viewing eBooks you may click the second link displayed here.)

The eJournal issue will now open in your browser. You will see options at the bottom of the screen allowing you to view the eJournal as you wish - either 'Scroll' or 'Slide' through the eJournal or choose to read it as a 'Book'.

If you choose to 'Scroll' through the eJournal issue simply use your mouse cursor to drag the pages up and down in the viewport. If you choose to 'Slide' through the eJournal simply click on the page to slide on to the next page. When you to choose the 'Book' option as you click a page it will turn over to reveal the next page, simulating a real book.

You may also view all pages of the eJournal issue in tile mode. Simply click on the tile mode icon at the bottom of the screen and all pages will be shown in the viewfinder. To view a specific page click on the tile and the page will open.

Alternatively, you can view the table of contents for the eJournal issue by clicking the Contents icon link at the top left of the screen.

You can use the Navigation icons at the top of the screen to skip to a particular page of the eJournal issue. As you scroll over an icon an explanation of its function is displayed e.g. 'Jump to the beginning', 'Back 10 pages', 'Previous page', 'Next page', 'Forward 10 pages', 'Jump to the end'.

You may also search for a specific topic within the eJournal issue. Enter the word(s) in the search field at the bottom of the screen. The number of search results found will be shown, together with 'Prev' and 'Next' buttons to skip to the previous and next instances of this search term in situ within the eJournal issue. All search terms will be clearly highlighted in yellow on the page.

If you wish to enlarge the size of the eJournal issue on the screen use the Zoom in icon. If you wish to reduce the size of the eJournal issue on the screen use the Zoom out icon. To return the eJournal issue to its normal size simply use the Reset zoom icon. You are still able to scroll, slide or turn over the pages when in zoom in or out mode.

You are able to add and save your own notes to an eJournal issue. Simply click the Notes icon at the top of the screen and type in the notes area that will appear.

To save your notes click 'Save Notes'. To close the notes area at any time click the Close icon. When you return to the eJournal issue at a later date you can retrieve your notes by clicking the 'Notes' icon. Always remember to save your notes before exiting the eJournal issue.

Please note: To retrieve your saved notes and annotations you must have logged in using the same username and password as before.

When you have finished reading the eJournal click the Exit icon to close.
